Sr. Director, External Communications (Remote Eligible)

As Smartsheet’s Senior Director of External Communications, you will oversee the vision, development, and execution of integrated, global communications strategies and programs across public relations and executive communications, aligned with Smartsheet’s overall go-to-market (GTM) and business goals.
We seek an experienced, hands-on senior communications professional to evolve our external communications efforts into storytelling that drives impact and action. We are looking for someone with a history of creating innovative and impactful storylines and the ability to partner with our executive team to raise the profile of our company and category. This role will proactively think creatively to garner more earned attention for key thought leadership and product messages.
In doing so, you will lead and contribute to a dynamic team focused on further increasing Smartsheet’s industry dominance as a pioneer and leader in Enterprise Work Management as we accelerate toward achieving $2B in annualized recurring revenue.
You will report to the Vice President, Global Corporate Communications in our Bellevue, WA office, or you may work remotely from anywhere in the US where Smartsheet is a registered employer.
You Will:
- Strategize and Execute: Lead strategy development and execution support for global public relations and executive communications programs aligned to business objectives and priorities.
- Lead End-to-End Communications: Architect the integrated global communications strategy, programs, and investment recommendations for Smartsheet.
- Expand Global Reach: Build and expand the external communications operating model globally.
- Measure Impact: Measure and report quarterly on the impact and effectiveness of PR and executive communications initiatives.
- Collaborate Proactively on Key Corporate Milestones: Actively collaborate with teams to manage a proactive, well-planned external media strategy, including preparation and execution of corporate and business announcements, media opportunities in line with external events and/or earnings activities, and opportunistic media relations.
- Inspire Excellence, Lead, and Develop: Lead, grow, and develop a team of high-performing communications professionals.
- Research and Innovate: Research relevant media coverage and industry trends and develop outreach campaigns that position executives as thought leaders around those topics.
- Engage Stakeholders: Meet regularly with key business stakeholders to understand business needs and objectives; provide counsel and recommendations on external communications strategies and best practices.
- Build Influencer Networks: Build a plan to further develop a robust spokesperson and influencer network globally. Support building external platforms and messaging through interviews, op-eds, and speaking engagements.
- Define Key Messages: Define key messages on topics relevant to Smartsheet’s core business and audiences with a focus on developing our profile as a respected thought leader.
You Have:
- Experience: 15+ years of leadership experience in corporate communications or public relations roles, preferably in the software/SaaS industry.
- Education: Bachelor’s degree in Journalism, Public Relations, Marketing, Communications, or or a related field or equivalent practical experience.
- Leadership: Experience leading a team with proven ability to attract, retain, and inspire a results-oriented team.
- Executive Interaction: Demonstrated experience presenting to and interacting with press, industry analysts, executive leaders, board members, customers, and a wide variety of internal and external stakeholders.
- Agency Management: Experience managing relationships with global PR agencies.
- Team-oriented with Accountability: Strong team ethic and collaborative work style, with the ability to work independently, assume responsibility, and be accountable.
- Executive Presence: A strong executive presence, exceptional interpersonal skills, and experience working directly with C-level and senior executives and driving alignment among them.
- Communication Skills: World-class communication skills, both verbal and written.
- Creative Thinking: Ability to think creatively, with a track record for bringing strategic thinking and product propositions into action plans and output.
- Innovation: Innovation and creativity: ability to conceptualize and effectively communicate ideas, to improve and chart the next chapter of storytelling.

Smartsheet provides a competitive base salary range for roles that may be hired in different geographic areas we are licensed to operate our business from. Actual compensation is determined by several factors including, but not limited to, level of professional, educational experience, skills, and specific candidate location. In addition, this role will be eligible for a market competitive incentive opportunity and RSU stock grant upon accepted offer. California & New York: $210,600 to $291,600 | All other US States: $195,000 to $270,000.
